Broadway Academy is an inner-city school that serves one of the most deprived areas in Birmingham with high crime rates and low social mobility. The school has 1,200 pupils on roll, aged 11-18. The proportion of disadvantaged pupils is very high. Most cohorts are around 60% disadvantaged (pupil premium), with some more than 90%. The amount of SEND students is also higher than most schools. Over the last four years, the number of ethnicities has widened. We now have a very vibrant and varied population of pupils, with high numbers of EAL.
School goals and ambitions
During the pandemic, we acquired 40 acres of land in the Worcestershire countryside. We now have staff and goals in place to really utilise this land for enrichments activities and boosting our curriculum. Most of our students do not leave Aston and we see Island Pool and Esperance Farm as an opportunity to integrate the outdoors into their curriculum experience, giving them an enriched education and lifelong love for the outdoors.

Over the course of the next few months, we want to increase usage (including parents and community) and come up with a robust annual plan that outlines an effective strategy for utilising the facilities.

Impact school context
We have improved the facilities at Island Pool, increasing the amount of activities on offer. We have also trained up more staff so that we have less reliance on external providers.

The mapping document shows that students get to experience outdoor learning at school and our outdoor centre. The amount of provision at our outdoor centre has almost doubled and all year groups are well represented.
