School context
Shirebrook Academy is an 11-16 Secondary Academy located in North East Derbyshire, six miles north of Mansfield and twelve miles East of Chesterfield. Shirebrook Academy and its community are geographically isolated, and transport links to larger towns and cities are extremely limited which impacts on cultural capital experiences for young people and employment.
There are 830 students currently on role, the proportion of disadvantaged students and those with Special Educational Needs is around double the national average. The community ranks in the bottom 10% of the UK for deprivation according to the IDACI index, there are 42.2% of the students that attend eligible for free school meals.
School goals and ambitions
Our aim is to foster a culture of independence and ambition in our students and to develop learners who are willing to take risks and who learn from their mistakes. We want to develop young people who can cope with the difficulties that life may bring. This includes learning how to cope mentally and physically so that they are able to ‘bounce back' and have the ability to be happy and successful, even after something difficult has happened.
We want to develop students who own their own learning and behaviours by being prepared, ambitious and responsible for their own actions. We want to support our students so that they are accountable and focused on their progress and achievements.

Impact school context
We have worked hard to foster a culture of resilience across the academy by using the language of resilience linked to as many student situations and experiences as possible. We have revamped our assembly programme and language used about learning and resilience across the curriculum. This has promoted coping strategies to help with taking responsibility and bouncing back. We have seen improvements in students taking on leadership roles, taking more risks in learning in Maths, DT, The Arts and PE and have seen improved learning outcomes in NGRT reading tests for Ks3.
There has been a significant increase in Positive House points and attendance overall has improved and PA reduced.
